Season of Intolerance

Suddenly there has been a surfeit of acts of intolerance. Rationalists are killed for questioning ideologies, people are butchered over choice of food, ideologues are smeared with black paint for assisting a 'traitor'...and the list goes on. What I am worried is that the younger generation suddenly has 'role models' that no society needs. We have become a nation of 2-minute quick-fixers, who have an answer for everything.

Education and Learning

That we had to bring in a law (the RTE Act, 2010) to make education a right six decades after independence itself speaks of how two of our basic rights - healthcare and education were denied to the masses. In the backdrop of huge investment - public as well as private - in the two areas notwithstanding, should have been taken as an indictment of India's failure to fulfill the basic needs of its citizens.  The ASER 2017 report by Pratham (http://img.asercentre.org/docs/Publications/ASER%20Reports/ASER%202017/aser2017fullreport.pdf) has only confirmed our worst fears. The teenagers (14-18 years) are badly disabled, so to speak when it comes to basic skills. Let us not forget that these are amongst those who suddenly, from an exam-based evaluation system, which was in vogue till 2010, had to shift to no exams at all for the last seven years. Mugabe and Padukone c.1980

It was March 1980. After having done with my matriculation exams, I was looking for magazines to brush up on my general knowledge. The latest issue of Competition Success Review had Robert Mugabe on its cover while Prakash Padukone held aloft the All-England Badminton Championship trophy on the cover of Sportsworld. Mugabe was indeed the poster boy of liberation and democracy. Padukone was a matter of pride for Indian sports in an era when there were hardly any sports heroes to write home about. I remember having read with a lot of interest articles detailing Mugabe's guerrilla war and how he was the hope of the predominantly black nation, on the doorstep of an apartheid-ridden South Africa. Winds of change in South Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, would sweep across the borders and rid South Africans of their misery.
