Fear creates Opportunity

Fear creates opportunity. Writing in the Business Week, December 11, 2008, Ben Levisohn strongly advocates that it is the right time to start a bank. Some of the reasons for the same are:

New banks don't have bad assets

They can borrow money at ultra-low interest rates

They can deal with customers instead of dealing with problems

The success rate for startups is the same whether they're created in crisis or calm; roughly 75% are profitable within three years

Banks coming out of a downturn have a better chance of being acquired and providing a potential windfall for investors

They can focus on small business loans

People prefer depositing money in a bank safer than investing

Org-Chart Strategy

In an aside at the Bush administration's attempts to bring the US economy back on track, 2008 Economics Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman has drawn attention to org-chart strategy. He describes this as managers' attempts to hide their lack of any actual ideas about what to do by making a big show of rearranging the boxes and lines that say who reports to whom. Krugman refers to the comic strip Dilbert where this term finds mention, and says this applies to all large organisations. So true!
